At pickup you choose 2 cards to strip from your deck, then you take 16 damage. The hit is applied immediately, outside combat, and nothing scales it, so never take it at 16 HP or below. Both removals are your choice: Strikes, Defends and any Curse that is not Eternal all qualify. Because the effect is spent on pickup, the relic cannot be traded.

Take it when two dead cards hold your deck back and you can spare the HP, ideally near a Rest Site. Prefer Empty Cage or Precise Scissors if those removals are on offer instead.
