After every fight in a combat room an extra reward of 15 Gold is added to the pile. That covers normal fights, elites and act bosses, with one exception: the boss of the final act gives nothing. The merchant never stocks it, and it leaves the reward pool once you reach the act 3 treasure chest (floor 41 solo, 38 in multiplayer), so it only ever shows up early.
