Abyssal Baths

You discover a secluded chamber.

Steam rises from bubbling pools of hot liquid that shifts colors with hypnotic rhythm. Barnacled growths hang from the ceiling, dripping viscous fluid that hisses and writhes when it touches the surface. The air feels heavy, laden with salt and something unmistakably organic.

As you approach the edge of the largest pool, the liquid ripples. The waters bubble more intensely as if anticipating your entry.
The liquid burns against your skin, simultaneously freezing and scalding.

Beneath the surface, something brushes against your legs—tendrils? Currents with purpose? But when the pain subsides, you feel... denser somehow. More substantial. The waters seem to hum with satisfaction.
The temperature keeps rising!

How long can you endure before the steam cooks you from within?
It keeps getting hotter!

The pool's bubbling sounds like laughter.
IT'S SO HOT!

You wonder if this is what it's like to live in the Village of Demons?
You have bathed so long you have lost track of time and your mind...
It's nice in here.
Really fantastic.
You feel great
Mmm...
Zzz...
..zzzz....
If you bathe any longer you will die.
You die. The run ends here.
The heat finally gets to you, and you hop out of the bath.
You decline the temptation of the waters, instead gathering crystalline salts that have formed along the edges. As you apply them to your skin, the pools churn and froth agitatedly. The ambient temperature drops noticeably, and for a moment all reflective surfaces in the room show a version of you that seems hollow-eyed and diminished. You can't shake the feeling of having missed something transformative.

Max HP+2HP−4

Each time you Linger: Every dip gives 2 Max HP, heals 2 with it, then deals damage. That is 3 on the first dip and 1 more on each dip after, with no cap. You can get out after any dip. Once the next dip would kill you, the game shows its warning in place of the usual text and the Linger plate glows red, but it still works. The screen above plays someone who walks in with about 70 HP.

Exit Baths

What the game says
The heat finally gets to you, and you hop out of the bath.

Abstain

Heal 10 HP.

Which option to take

Immerse and linger three or four times whenever you are above half HP; +8 Max HP for 10 HP is a bargain in Act 1, and every later rest site heals 30% of the larger number. Stop when the next dip would cost 5 or more.

Immerse

Max HP+2HP−3

Abstain

Heal10 HP
  • Abstain only if you are genuinely low and no rest site is close.

How it plays

Immerse and Linger

  • Immerse: raises your Max HP by 2, which also heals you 2, then deals 3 damage that ignores Block and every power, so the first dip nets +2 Max HP for 1 HP.
  • Linger: for another dip as often as you like. Each one is +2 Max HP again, but the damage climbs by 1 every time (4, then 5, then 6).

Running cost

  • Counting the heal, the cost per dip is 1, 2, 3, 4 HP: three dips give +6 Max HP for 6 HP, four give +8 for 10, and six give +12 for 21.

Ending it

  • Exit Baths ends the event at any point.
  • When the next dip would leave you at 0 the text warns you outright, but nothing stops you.
  • Abstain instead heals 10 HP and ends the event.
