Subroutine is the Defect Power Subroutine, 1 Energy or 0 upgraded, 1 stack per play. When you play a Power card, it records your Subroutine stacks at that moment, and after the card resolves you gain that much Energy. With 1 stack every Power you play afterward refunds 1 Energy.

Notes
Playing Subroutine itself gives nothing, since it had 0 stacks when it started, and a second copy only pays its extra Energy on Powers played after it. Teammates' Powers do not count. The refund arrives after the card, so it cannot pay for the Power that triggered it, but it is there for the next card. With 2 stacks, 1-cost Powers become Energy-positive.
